How to calculate inflation rate for $3,610,321, 1958 to 2015

Our calculations use the following inflation rate formula to calculate the change in value between 1958 and 2015:

CPI in 2015 CPI in 1958
×
1958 USD value
=
2015 USD value

Then plug in historical CPI values. The U.S. CPI was 28.9 in the year 1958 and 237.017 in 2015:

237.01728.9
×
$3,610,321
=
$29,609,254.41

$3,610,321 in 1958 has the same "purchasing power" or "buying power" as $29,609,254.41 in 2015.

To get the total inflation rate for the 57 years between 1958 and 2015, we use the following formula:

CPI in 2015 - CPI in 1958CPI in 1958
×
100
=
Cumulative inflation rate (57 years)

Plugging in the values to this equation, we get:

237.017 - 28.928.9
×
100
=
720%

Alternate Measurements of Inflation

There are multiple ways to measure inflation. Published rates of inflation will vary depending on methodology. The Consumer Price Index, used above, is the most common standard used globally.

Alternative measurements are sometimes used based on context and economic/political circumstances. Below are a few examples of alternative measurements.

Core Inflation

Also of note is the Core CPI, which uses the standard CPI but omits the more volatile categories of food and energy.

Core inflation averaged 3.76% per year between 1958 and 2015 (vs all-CPI inflation of 3.76%), for an inflation total of 718.61%. In 1958, core inflation was 2.29%.

When using the core inflation measurement, $3,610,321 in 1958 is equivalent in buying power to $29,554,564.45 in 2015, a difference of $25,944,243.45. Recall that the converted amount is $29,609,254.41 when all items including food and energy are measured.

Comparison to S&P 500 Index

The average inflation rate of 3.76% has a compounding effect between 1958 and 2015. As noted above, this yearly inflation rate compounds to produce an overall price difference of 720.13% over 57 years.

To help put this inflation into perspective, if we had invested $3,610,321 in the S&P 500 index in 1958, our investment would be nominally worth approximately $956,465,325.26 in 2015. This is a return on investment of 26,392.53%, with an absolute return of $952,855,004.26 on top of the original $3,610,321.

These numbers are not inflation adjusted, so they are considered nominal. In order to evaluate the real return on our investment, we must calculate the return with inflation taken into account.

The compounding effect of inflation would account for 87.81% of returns ($839,841,421.06) during this period. This means the inflation-adjusted real return of our $3,610,321 investment is $113,013,583.19. You may also want to account for capital gains tax, which would take your real return down to around $96,061,546 for most people.

Investment in S&P 500 Index, 1958-2015
Original AmountFinal AmountChange

Inflation Adjusted
$3,610,321$116,623,904.193,130.29%

Information displayed above may differ slightly from other S&P 500 calculators. Minor discrepancies can occur because we use the latest CPI data for inflation, annualized inflation numbers for previous years, and we compute S&P price and dividends from January of 1958 to latest available data for 2015 using average monthly close price.
